Manchester United have announced the signing of Alexander Buttner from Vitesse Arnhem for an undisclosed fee, with the player signing a five year deal with the Premier League giants.
The Dutch full back is the club’s fourth signing of the season, and offers some much needed cover and competition at left back, where Patrice Evra is the club’s only other senior option.
A versatile defender, Buttner can also cover on the right side of defence, and was a part of Holland’s preliminary squad for the summer’s European championships, though he did not make the final cut.
Sir Alex Ferguson was very enthusiastic to reveal the player as United’s latest addition, claiming the Dutch defender would offer an excellent alternative to Patrice Evra, as well as setting up an interesting challenge next season when Fabio returns from his loan spell at Queens Park Rangers:
“Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we’re delighted to sign him. He’s someone we’ve been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position.”
Buttner was understandably delighted to seal a move to Manchester United, after a fine start to his career in the Dutch top flight, where he made 119 senior appearances for his former club. The defender is now looking forward to linking up with his new teammates, and launching himself into a fantastic new challenge and opportunity to prove himself at one of the biggest clubs in the world of football:
“Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life. It’s a team I have admired for many years now and I can’t wait to join my teammates and play my part in helping the club be successful.”
